NASA’s Asteroid Watch dashboard has identified five asteroids that will make relatively close approaches to Earth in the coming days. Largest Asteroid of 2023 HO6. Which is estimated to be about 880 feet wide. It will make its closest approach to Earth on July 5. Passing by at a distance of about 2 million miles. The smallest of the asteroids is 2018 NW. Whose size is about 31 feet wide. It will make its closest approach to Earth on July 10. Passing by at a distance of about 4.3 million miles.
Here is a table of the five asteroids and their closest approach dates and distances:
Asteroid | Closest Approach Date | Closest Approach Distance |
---|---|---|
2023 HO6 | July 5 | 2 million miles |
2023 KB5 | July 6 | 3.8 million miles |
2023 LN1 | July 10 | 4.3 million miles |
2018 NW | July 10 | 4.3 million miles |
2023 MD2 | July 11 | 1.3 million miles |
All of these asteroids are classified as “potentially hazardous asteroids” (PHAs). Which means that they are large enough and are approaching Earth close enough. That they could potentially pose a threat to our planet. However, NASA has determined that all of these asteroids are on safe trajectories and will not impact Earth.
