Cyclone Brings Storm Surge, Heavy Rain to Gujarat

Cyclones are a natural disaster that can cause widespread damage and loss of life. They are caused by warm, moist air rising from the ocean, which creates a low-pressure system. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, forming clouds and rain. The winds in a cyclone can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, and the storm surge can cause flooding that can reach up to 20 feet in height.

Cyclones can occur in any ocean, but they are most common in the tropics. In India, cyclones typically occur during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. The most destructive cyclones in Indian history have occurred in the Bay of Bengal, which is located on the eastern coast of India.

The Indian government has a number of measures in place to help protect people from cyclones. These measures include:

  • Early warning systems that alert people to the approach of a cyclone
  • Evacuation plans that help people move to safe areas
  • Disaster relief efforts that provide food, water, and shelter to those affected by a cyclone

Despite these measures, cyclones continue to cause significant damage and loss of life in India. In 2004, a cyclone killed more than 10,000 people in the Indian state of Orissa. And in 2013, a cyclone killed more than 3,000 people in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Cyclones are a major threat to life and property in India. The Indian government is working to improve early warning systems and evacuation plans, but more needs to be done to protect people from these destructive storms.

As of 04:05:34 PST on 2023-06-12, the cyclone in India is currently located about 320km SW of Porbandar, 360km SSW of Devbhumi Dwarka, 440km South of Jakhau Port, 440km SSW of Naliya. It is expected to cross near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by noon of 15th June as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS). The cyclone is currently packing winds of up to 185 kilometers per hour and is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the coastal areas of Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts, and has advised people to take all necessary precautions.

Here are some of the things you can do to prepare for a cyclone:
