Adipurush: A Majestic Retelling of the Ramayana

Adipurush is an upcoming Indian epic-historical drama film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles, the film stars Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh, and Devdatta Nage. It is scheduled to be theatrically released on 16 June 2023.

The film is set 7,000 years ago and follows the story of Ayodhya’s prince Raghava and his brother Lakshmana as they travel to the island of Lanka to rescue Raghava’s wife Janaki, who has been abducted by Lankesh, the demon king of Lanka.

Adipurush was announced in August 2020, with principal photography taking place from February to November 2021 in Mumbai. The film has a budget of ₹700 crore (US$88 million), making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. It is shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages and filmed in 3D.

The cast includes Prabhas as Raghava (Lord Rama), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita), Saif Ali Khan as Ravana (Lankesh), Sunny Singh as Lakshmana, and Devdatta Nage as Bajrang (Hanuman). The music for the film is composed by Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara.

The teaser and trailer of Adipurush received mixed reactions, with criticism mainly directed towards the visual effects and CGI. The film’s trailer, released on 9 May 2023, was better received after improvements were made to the visual effects. An action trailer was released on 6 June 2023.

Adipurush was initially scheduled for release on 11 August 2022 but was postponed multiple times to allow for additional work on the visual effects and to avoid clashes with other films. The film is now set to release on 16 June 2023 in Hindi and Telugu, with dubbed versions in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. While it was initially planned to premiere at the Tribeca Festival, the makers later canceled the premiere, but the film will still be played at the festival on June 15 and 17.
